Where should I start studying?
I usually recommend starting with the Book of Luke if you've never studied Scripture before and you just want a good place to start.
What time of the day should I study?
Most people would advise you to start in the morning, but I'm not a morning person. So, I say the best time for you is the best time for you! The important thing is to set aside a regular time and stick to that schedule as closely as possible.
Where should I sit to study?
The best answer is to simply find a place that is comfortable because you do not want to feel pressured to rush because you are tired from sitting in the same place too long. If the weather is mild, an outside setting is sometimes refreshing. A comfy chair or sofa is always good.
What do I need for my study?
You will need a Bible of course, in the version of your choosing. The various versions are listed in my How to Study the Bible book. You will also need a notebook. The cheap composition notebooks are my favorite because they lay flat and stack neatly. And a good ink pen is a requirement because if God has spoken to you particularly through His Word, it is important enough to record it!
What is the first step when I sit down to study?
PRAY. Ask God to bring understanding to your study. Tell Him that you want to hear His truth. Ask Him to clear your mind of all distractions that would hinder your focus on what He wants to teach you. Tell Him that you are depending on His Holy Spirit to guide you into life changing truth.
What if I've studied the Bible before and want to go deeper than ever?
My book How to Study the Bible will teach you how to go deeper into the study of God's Word than ever before. It introduces and instructs you in Bible study methods and instructions for practical guidance. But it also, teaches the attitudes and desires that you must have because productive, life changing Bible study is a result of your intimate, personal relationship with God.
What if I don't understand who I am or what I have in Christ? I've never been taught anything about that.
I almost envy you, because coming to understand those truths has been the most exciting spiritual experiences of my life. I strongly encourage you to get my book, The Basics of Life (Available on Amazon). In it, I share what God taught me over the last 30 years. I have found that most believers are like I was. I had no idea what I became when I became a Christian. I had no idea what I got when I got saved. And I had no idea what He wanted me to do. So, I spent years trying to become who I already was, trying to obtain what I already had, and trying to do what He never called me to do. It is my greatest passion to show others what they might be missing and how powerful these truths are in your life.
